e3s carried out fieldwork recently in Shakespeare Bay, in the Marlborough Sounds.

e3Scientific Helicopter Training Course

In early May, e3Scientific’s terrestrial ecology team undertook STEP helicopter training with the Department of Conservation. The training was focused on entering and exiting operating helicopters safely, when landing sites are restricted. This training now increases the scope of work that can be undertaken by our team. The training has given staff the experience and knowledge […]

Ulva Island Diving

The e3s scientific dive team recently had the pleasure of completing subtidal ecological assessments in the marine reserve in Patersons’ Inlet, Stewart Island. This involved sediment and infauna coring, epibiota photo transects and photoquadrats of wharf piles. The biodiversity and habitat created by a wharf is often underestimated and they can often be one of […]

Alpine Botanical Field Trip

In mid-January, e3Scientific ecologists Rebecca Teele and Melissa Jager joined Te Papa’s Heidi Meudt and Antony Kusabs on a trip into Otago’s alpine zone in search of rare NZ plants. In particular, the group were looking for native forget-me-nots in the beautiful Pisa Range. In very windy conditions, the threatened Myosotis cheesemanii was found, recorded, and sampled (see photo).

Monitoring in Bluff Harbour

We were joined by a pod of bottlenose dolphins with two young calves in tow during deployment helping to collect data immediately. Bottlenose dolphins are frequent visitors to Bluff Harbour at this time of year, coming in to feed on flounder […]
